Italian EVO oil, strategies to relaunch the sector

The workshop organized by Unaprol – Consorzio Olivicolo italiano – “Italian extra virgin olive oil, strategies for relaunching the sector. How to fight speculation, fraud, counterfeiting and climate change “

According to Ismea data, in 2018 production in Italy reached about 185 thousand tons, one of the worst results of the last 25 years (comparable only to that of 2016) mainly due to the frosts of last February. The market share is decreasing with Italy which has registered a worrying -4% in the last two months. A series of critical issues also affect the olive sector, from speculations to Xylella , from counterfeits to the invasion of foreign oil, from climate change to fraud.

“The situation is very serious, which is why we have been asking for government intervention for months through the National Olive Plan 2.0. To save Italian oil from foreign attacks, fraud and speculation, a supply chain pact is needed to guarantee the consumer – explained David Granieri , president of Unaprol. The proposal we are launching today is that of a new classification of extra virgin olive oil with a lowering of the acidity level from 0.8 to 0.5% to increase quality and more effectively counter fraud and cheating that are concentrated in the area border. The panel test works well and the classification is wrong ”.
Oleum Sicilia fully supports the battle of the President of Coldiretti Ettore Prandini who, analyzing the problem of counterfeiting, declared: “Faced with the growing risk of fraud at the national level, it is still necessary to tighten the loose meshes of legislation with the reform of crimes in the agri-food sector, increase controls made on processing and import, overcoming the state secrecy on the destination
